Veterinary Services
Below are listed some of the veterinary services provided by Small
Animal Medicine & Surgery for dogs, cats, rabbits, and "pocket pets."
Routing Examinations and Preventative Health Care
Most people think of preventative health care in terms of puppy or
kitten shots and adult boosters. This field encompasses a wide range of
topics in addition to vaccinations. Diet, training, internal parasite control,
flea and tick control, heartworms, feline leukemia, dental care, behavior, and
rabbit care are just a few of the many subjects covered under preventative health
care. One of our most important jobs is to make pet owners aware that "an ounce
of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

Laboratory Medicine
The Hospital has a well-equipped in-house diagnostic laboratory
as well as access to local, state and national laboratories.
Radiology and Ultrasound
Small Animal Medicine & Surgery is equipped to do most radiological
studies, including OFA studies. In addition, we have an ultrasound to
supplement radiological (and some surgical) procedures. Ultrasound is
most well known for diagnosing pregnancy. But it is also a noninvasive
tool for diagnosing such things as abdominal tumors and eye diseases.

Surgery and Anesthesia
Spays, castrations, soft tissue surgery, suturing, orthopedic surgery,
C-sections, and eye surgery are just a few surgical procedures we perform
on a daily basis. Our surgical suite allows owners to observe some selected
surgical procedures, while still maintaining a sterile environment.

Dentistry
Dentistry is rapidly becoming more specialized in veterinary medicine.
More pet owners are becoming aware that bad breath, plaque, gum disease and
tooth disease do affect the well-being of their pet. Dental prophylaxis
includes cleaning, polishing, fluoride applications, treatment of gum and
tooth disease, and follow-up home care. Many of the new home care products
are exciting in that they are easy to use and are made for pets, not people.
Cardiology
The Hospital has equipment to do complete cardiac workups, including
blood pressure, electrocardiogram (E KG), radiographs, and echocardiograms
(ultrasound of the heart).
Dermatology
Problems with the skin and hair coat are common in southern
regions. We are capable of doing complete skin workups on an individual basis.
Many skin workups involve consultations on such matters as skin allergies and
flea control in dogs and cats..
GI Diagnosis
Gastrointestinal disorders such as vomiting and diarrhea can be
frustrating to both pet and owner, especially if long-term in nature.
Both upper and lower GI workups are possible and often include radiographs,
dye studies, endoscopic evaluation, and laboratory testing.
Reproduction and Pediatrics
This is one of the more fun areas that can also be confusing at times.
Whether you are a family that wants to have that one litter, or a breeder
needing maximum performance, we will be glad to set up a consultation and
program to meet your needs.
Geriatrics
Older pets have special needs and often develop specific medical
problems. We hope we can help you and your pet with these needs so the
later years will be enjoyable to all.
Pet Loss and Bereavement
Anyone who has lost a special pet realizes what a difficult time
this is in their life. Having support and understanding during this
time can mean a lot to a family that is grieving over the loss of
their pet. Our staff has been trained to help you during this time.
We also have some excellent literature and videos which we feel will
be of some help. If you need assistance with cremation or burial services,
we can provide you with this information, as well as provide caskets
and burial urns.
Other Fields
Other fields of veterinary medicine and surgery that our Hospital
deals with are opthamology, neurology, pulmonary disorders, and
diseases of the musculoskeletal system.
Referrals
As veterinary medicine becomes more specialized and advanced, Small
Animal Medicine & Surgery recognizes that there are some areas where the
Hospital is not fully equipped or trained. Such areas might include heart
surgery, certain dental techniques, advanced radiographic procedures,
MRI, and complicated laboratory testing. In these cases, we feel it best
to refer your pet to a specialist, who has received advanced training
in the necessary area.
The Video Series
The Hospital library has an extensive video series on all aspects of
pet health care. Video titles are listed in the brochure entitled Small
Animal Medicine & Surgery Video Series. Anyone is welcome to watch any
video, and there is no charge for this service. We also have, or can order
for loan, several excellent videos for schools and other groups.
